Greenwave Systems The Onramp to the IoT

Greenwave Systems is a global IoT software and services company trailblazing a world where people can easily and safely connect things that make life better. Founded in 2008 by former Cisco Systems Consumer Business Group CTO Martin Manniche and former Cisco/Linksys Senior Director Peter Wilmar Christensen, the company initially developed a B2B connected-home platform to manage low-power IoT devices and cloud connectivity for energy management, connected lighting and home monitoring applications. The software soon expressed capabilities extending far beyond smart home usage and has since evolved into the AXON Platform,a robust managed-services solution applicable to every corner of the IoT/M2M ecosystem and instrumental in millions of IoT deployments.

Before starting Greenwave, Manniche headed the Cisco Connected Home architecture team drivingZ-Wave and ZigBee technology over TCP/IP, HomePlug, MoCA, and Wi-Fi standards. In one of his early ventures, he enabled the development of the HDD recorder and produced the world’s first connected DVD player. Greenwave’s core executive team grew to include similarly inventive talent — codec designers, adaptor inventors, network pioneers and multiple-patent-holders — with backgrounds ranging from engineering operations and PLM to predictive systems and software-defined networks, video compression, contextual data, IP telephony and device management. And yes, there are even a couple of nuclear scientists on the team. Many Greenwave executives hail from Cisco, and the company’s roster includes leadership veterans from Apple, Belkin, Dolby, Ericsson, JDSUMotorola Mobility, Nokia, NXP and Toshiba. The breadth of Greenwave’s technological expertise is unparalleled.

Notable examples of Greenwave’s contributions to the IoT ecosystem include collaboration on the FiOS Quantum Gateway for Verizon and Frontier Communications, and development of E.ON Touch to enable smartphone climate-control for customers of the world’s largest investor-owned energy service utility. Countless AXON-enabled devices populate the world through partnerships with NXP, DirecTV, IBM and Intel, among others. The AXON Platform features a framework to dynamically and massively scale managed services spanning network, router, video and all manner of wireless implementations, regardless of protocol.

Close collaboration with IoT provider partners is key to Greenwave’s success. “The company doesn’t simply sell and maintain IoT software. There is an essential consultancy component in its development model that begins with assessment and leverages multifaceted technology expertise above and beyond software delivery (hardware, networking, cloud, security, etc.), says Manniche.” Further, the company also ensures that design and development align with provider strategy and facilitate the extension, implementation and management of related services from the same platform.

The model has worked well for the company, which attracted $60-million in series C funding earlier this year. Greenwave now employs over285 full-time staff and recently announced the recruitment of DivX inventor Jerome Rota as Chief Scientist of Usability and InfoSec visionary Mark Baugher as Principal Security Architect. Other signs of company expansion include a new R&D center in Singapore, the opening of a Silicon Valley branch, and the planned relocation to larger executive headquarters in Irvine, California.

Greenwave has proved its mettle in the industry with a range of innovative IoT products. Having recognized by leading institutions around the world that have consistently shown faith in the company, Greenwave has settled itself in the position of a worldwide IoT leader. Some of the major awards achieved by Greenwave include Frost & Sullivan’s 2016 North American Innovative Technology Award for Entrepreneurial Company of the Year, 2016 IoT Evolution Product of the Year, Broadband World Forum Most Innovative IoT Solution, Postscapes Internet of Things Editor’s Choice Award for Breakout Startup.

In the course of few years, Greenwave plans to increase and diversify its portfolio and further expand into analytics and mobile infrastructure for IoT/M2M solutions.
